Photograph of Salcey Forest in Northants

In their never-ending (and as yet unfulfilled) quest for images that capture the imagination, stir the spirits, and evoke thoughts of other places, other times… basically, photographs that are quite nice to look at… the other day the PhArtists found themselves transported to Salcey Forest in Northamptonshire.

Transported by a mutual friend in fact, who’d come along not just as the driver but also in quest of photos. And to help us all get lost… repeatedly!

The Forest lies between Northampton and Milton Keynes and is a remnant of the medieval royal hunting forest. Nowadays there are a number of well-tended trails, including a fascinating “treetop walk” that we had explored on a previous visit earlier in the year.

On neither of these occasions though did the Forest really live up to the expectations we had in terms of photographic potential. Or maybe we just weren’t in the right mood.
Certainly this time around the weather didn’t help very much, starting off quite grey and overcast and later turning to rain. Which eventually saw us beating a somewhat hasty retreat back into Bedford and the comforts of our favourite haunt, The Bear pub.

The rather meager harvest of the day photo-wise was underlined by our discovery that the Forest Café appeared to have changed hands… gone were the really friendly ladies that we’d encountered on our first visit, as also the even more friendly dog. Not in the least mitigated by a seeming drop in standards of the fare on offer.

Although the café did offer some compensation:

Nice place, lots of trees” describes Darren’s day at the Forest whilst Mike, clearly not quite getting into the spirit of the adventure, talks of “Apple pie and custard please”.

Way back in August of 2008 the PhArtists (although that’s not how we described ourselves at that time) and a couple of other photography enthusiasts formed a little online group to participate in a project that, at the time, was a really appealing idea. Not an original or unique idea by any means, but one that none of us had tried before.

Essentially the plan was for each of us to take it in turn, on a monthly basis, in setting a “theme for the month” whereupon we would all seek to photographically interpret the set theme in our own particular ways, hopefully with new and novel slants.

The intention behind the project being to challenge ourselves; to attempt new things and new ways of doing things; to “stretch” ourselves; and to “think outside the box”.

We, the PhArtists that is, actively participated in this practically every month right up until just a few weeks ago when, myself with my final contribution for June 2010, and Darren with his last contribution in the previous month, felt it was time to move on to other things.

One of those “other things” being of course this present PhArtists venture that in some small measure may well owe its beginnings to the work we did in that group project.
Whether that be the case or not, there’s little doubt that participation in the project encouraged us to be more creative in our work, and helped build the confidence to try out different techniques and approaches.

Alas, shortly after our departure the group itself appears to have dissolved, with each of the remaining participants going their own respective photographic ways… although, having established friendships within the project, keeping in touch with one another.

To mark this stage in our photographic journey Darren and I have assembled our own contributions to that project and posted them as a series, in chronological order, to our other blog… Phirst PhArts; so named because that’s where some of our “experimental work” has been, and will continue to be, posted… our try-outs, our failures, and (occasionally) hints of future directions.

You can browse through the entire series of our theme project photographs here.

From Mike’s personal blog:

I wonder sometimes whether this whole “looking for meaning” business is in fact a malaise of contemporary society; the sham and meaninglessness of most things, the preoccupation with materialistic objectives, the emphasis on appearance rather than substance… driving us to seek, even insist upon, meaning. To fill a void in the collective psyche… a void created by the rational, mechanistic, secular, technological world in which we live… Read more

Photograph of clouds over the River Great Ouse, Bedford

In an unusual departure from their typical photo-jaunts, a couple of days ago the PhArtists set out upon a stroll down to the river, with little intention of taking photographs… although if something particular presented itself, well, that would be different.

The river in question being of course the River Great Ouse, that runs through the heart of Bedford, on a journey starting near Brackley in Northamptonshire, traversing Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, and finally flowing into the sea at King’s Lynn in Norfolk; a journey of some 143 miles making it the fourth longest river in the United Kingdom.

It was by the side of this river that the PhArtists decided to relax, chill out for the afternoon, and enjoy the delights of… ice cream!

Rather too much ice cream in fact. And of course take some photographs, although that had specifically not been the original intention. But, well, what can one expect of PhArtists?

Mike, no doubt overcome by the effects of a surfeit of ice cream, described the little jaunt as The Quest of the Heavenly Ice Cream, whilst Darren, in peculiarly vindictive mood, settled for That’ll teach him. Although to discover who will be taught what you’ll just have to read his blog (no prizes for guessing right though!).

From Mike’s personal blog:

Surely the process of developing one’s own style or approach should be driven from within oneself, and not simply the result of “trying different things on” in the hope of discovering a “best fit”? How can that possibly be a true expression of one’s own personality and being? … Read more

photograph of ampthill in bedfordshire

The PhArtists enjoyed another one of their joint photo outings the other day, with a visit to the picturesque little town of Ampthill, in the heart of Bedfordshire.

The town has a curious “not quite 21st century” feel to it, and could easily have been a set for an episode of The Avengers or something.
Hardly surprising perhaps, given that Brian Clemens (The Avengers script editor, associate producer and main scriptwriter) lived there. One wonders whether the quaint town could have influenced his visions for the popular television series.

Anyway, that’s where the PhArtists betook themselves earlier this week, naturally snaring a few photos during the jaunt, and inevitably writing their own uniquely lunatic accounts of the visit on their respective (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) personal blogs:

So far this day isn’t going so well” and “And there wasn’t any ice cream” from Darren (two parts, just to be awkward), with “I do so wish my brain would function right” from Mike.

Never let it be thought that we only do PhArty-type things. If we’re spoken to real nice we can also be asked to do other things… for a consideration of course.

Shops for example. Photographs are useful for all sorts of purposes. Promotional naturally. On websites, leaflets, advertisements of one sort or another, and even as interior decoration!

I’m reminded to mention this as I’ve only just finished a batch from such a session, for “Froggy’s Gifts” in Bedford.

Inevitably of course they’ll have our own unique PhArtistic twist.
